IC:
Character name: Zatanna Zatara
Fandom: Young Justice
Timeline: shortly after Episode 15
Age: early teens (presumably 13)
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Zatanna is a young sorceress-in-training with genetically inherited powers. She can casts spells by reciting verbal commands backwards. On rare occasions, her incantations can be performed though speaking normally. She is also potentially capable of performing the highly risky art of blood magic, in which she writes a command backwards in her own blood (in a situation, for example, where her ability to speak has been severely damaged).
How would they use their abilities?: Fighting the good fight. Making her life on the ship a little easier. Maybe an occasional prank.
Appearance: Zatanna is petite, with developing curves and sharp facial features. Her skin is lightly tanned, a result of her Italian heritage, and her eyes, bright blue. Black hair falls down past her shoulders. In her initial Young Justice appearance, she is seen in three separate outfits:
(1) A black and white private school uniform,
(2) purple spaghetti-strap top with white pants, and
(3) her signature battle outfit, consisting of a white shirt, gloves and bowtie; tan vest; black jacket and mini shorts; grey stockings; and black boots. Alas, no tophat yet in this universe.
Personality:
Zatanna is young, confident, and rebellious. She gives off an initial aura of innocence, then proceeds to say and do things that destroy that image as casually as possible. Whether it be casually admitting to having used her magic to sneak out of the house in the middle of a battle, or suggesting her new friends "kidnap" her so she could go along on their non-mission. Above all else, she is fun-loving and adventurous, her attitude allowing her to mesh well within the team's dynamics almost from the very start.
There is a degree of flirtatiousness about her as well, evident in the exchanges she has with Robin. No matter how blatant or lame his advances come off, she takes it all in stride and does nothing to discourage him. It is unclear if she actually reciprocates his feelings, though she obviously enjoys his attention. Interestingly enough, she also seems to share his fondness for toying with the English language; when Robin tells her he's trying to act nonchalant, she tells him to be as "chalant" as he likes.
At the same time, however, she is incredibly loyal and brave. When the time comes to knock the immaturity and step up, she'll be ready and waiting. It wasn't her battle. Zatanna had never even met Red Tornado. This was something personal to the rest of the team, because Red Tornado had been their "Den Mother" for so long before his apparent betrayal. But she stood with them anyway, doing everything within her power to aid and assist. Even collaborating with Kid Flash on an attack.
Her belief in her magic is strong, and one of the few serious moments she has is in describing the source and limitations of her own power. She genuinely believes in fighting for justice, just like her dad (whom, rebelliousness aside, she greatly admires), and refuses to sit on the sidelines. No matter what Zatara tries to forbid.
Background:
Giovanni earned a living primarily by working as a stage magician, but he also had another job: prominent member of the Justice League. Formed in 2004 by founding members Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Hal Jordan, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter, their purpose is to come together in a never-ending battle against evil forces to protect all that is just and good. Giovanni was the eleventh member to join, as indicated by his designation number.
Many of the Justice Leaguers had taken on proteges during their tenure. Batman was one of the first, adopting a 9-year-old boy named Dick Grayson after the tragic death of his family. He trained Dick, taking him on as a sidekick under the moniker Robin. A year later, Green Arrow (the 8th member to join the League) took on a "partner" by the name of Roy Harper, code-named Speedy. Then, in 2009, Aquaman and Flash accepted Aqualad (Kaldur'ahm) and Kid Flash (Wally West) as their respective proteges.
Years passed, and the four "don't-call-us-sidekicks" were finally promised what they had been dreaming of for so long: entry into the Justice League. What they didn't know what that the day they passed through the main doors was only the first step. They still were not full members, nor did they have access to much of the League's confidential information. This angered Speedy in particular, who was tired of being patronized; he threw his Archer hat to the ground in disgust and officially quit to become the rogue vigilante Red Arrow.
Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad had other ideas. At first, they seemed to go along with Batman's order to stay put. But once the Leagers were out of sight, Robin went to work hacking into their computer files (a feat he was able to accomplish with ease because it was the "same system as the Batcave"). Gaining the information they needed, they left on an unsanctioned mission of their own. Their adventures led them to meet and eventually free Superboy, a months-old clone of Superman created by the mysterious Project Cadmus.
After the mission, the four of them declared they were forming their own team. A sort of Junior Justice League, though yet without an official title. Batman took three days to decide on their fate before declaring on June 8th, 2011, that the team will consist of not four, but five. He introduces them to Miss Martian, M'gann M'orzz, the niece of Martian Manhunter.
Since then, the team has gained a sixth member: Artemis Crock, a 15-year-old archer who claims to be the niece of Green Arrow.
Not as publicly known as their older counterparts, the collective roles of these teen superheroes were to take on the missions that, for one reason or another, the Justice League could not. However, when not on missions, they were under the watch of one or more "Den Mothers"--League members who volunteered their time to oversee training. The first full-time Leaguer to reside at Mount Justice (an old Justice League base that was reopened for the new generation) was the robot hero Red Tornado. A series of incidents led to his eventual departure--and believed betrayal--leaving the Den Mother position open.
On October 10th, 2011, Giovanni--the first in a line of rotating mentors--introduced the team to his daughter, Zatanna. His main hope was for her to be able to train with them under Black Canary, a Leaguer with expertise in the area of hand-to-hand combat. Robin, in particular, took an instant liking to the young sorceress. His normally cool, laid-back attitude dissolved into awkward introductions and blatant attempts at flirting. Zatanna found this incredibly amusing and did nothing to discourage his advances. If anything, she encouraged and even (maybe) reciprocated them.
While the younger generation were getting acquainted, Zatanna and Black Canary began discussing current affairs. This led the team to initiate a psychic conversation discussing the events leading up to Red Tornado's disappearance. A conversation that excluded Zatanna--something she was very much not happy about; she noticed and called them on it, drawing the mentors' attention. Superboy admitted to it, then requested more information. The answer Black Canary gave was unsatisfactory.
In hopes of distracting them, Zatara suggested the team give Zatanna a tour of the gave. They agreed, and after a quick off-screen magic clothing switch--which left Robin at a rare loss for words when he noticed the change--Zatanna allowed them to lead her off. She knew that they had no intentions of really taking that tour, of course, and the team admitted that they intended to search for Tornado on their own.
When Artemis expressed concerns about being able to trust Zatanna, the younger girl responded casually that she couldn't tell...as long as they "kidnapped" her.
"Oh, she's gonna fit in great here," Artemis voiced her approval.
Their first lead, at Wally's suggestion, was to interview a criminal by the name of Professor Ivo. As Morrow (Red Tornado's creator) was his biggest competitor, logic dictated that Ivo would want to keep track of his every move. Ivo would know where they could find Morrow, and subsequently, Red Tornado. But Ivo was stubborn, to the point where even M'gann's telepathy could not affect him. A quick truth spell from Zatanna, however, and he gave a detailed description of where and how to find Morrow. The rest of the team was left wide-eyed and speechless. It wasn't until they were on their way to Yellowstone National Part that Robin initiated the conversation on everyone's mind: "Look, I'm trying to be all non-chalant here..."
"Why? Be as chalant as you like," Zatanna quipped back with a smirk, coincidently(?) displaying the Boy Wonder's usual habit of mincing and playing around with English suffixes and prefixes.
While Robin was too pleasantly caught off-guard by this, Artemis took over. She basically wanted to know just how powerful Zatanna was. Could she teleport them where they needed to go? Or the villain to a cell? Or even force the robots to surrender? Zatanna took the questioning in stride, explaining that even her father didn't have that much power. She could casts spells using the energy from inside her, and thus, had her limits. Plus, she needed to know a spell cold, with all her focus and full use of her voice. In her own words, "I just can't make the impossible happen at will."
Upon the team's arrival, Aqualad approached Zatanna and suggested she remain on the ship.
"Is that an order?" she questioned.
"No. You must do as you see fit."
'Doing as she saw fit' apparently entailed a second quick magic change, this time into a uniform vaguely resembling that of her fathers. She was ready and willing to fight alongside them.
During the battle against Red Tornado and his robot siblings, Zatanna proved herself useful, but not invincible. Her first spell came with stuttering, as if she were unprepared, and it was easy enough for Red Tornado to stop her before she could finish, using his control over wind to suck the air from her lungs. Unable to speak, she was left powerless.
It was soon revealed, however, that the entire team had purposely been playing dead; Red Tornado had not betrayed them after all, and wanted to help in defeating his evil youngest brother, Red Volcano. The true enemy in this fight.
Volcano's first major attack on the team hauled large boulders of volcanic rock, separating them. Zatanna dodged, and when Robin psychically inquired if she was okay, she appeared out of the dust to say that she was "good". Continual failures at getting close to Volcano revealed a major disadvantage on their part: Volcano had been programmed with all the knowledge of their skills and abilities. He knew every move they could make before they did.
...but there was a catch: Zatanna was new. He had no information on her, or on her moves.
"And I'll bet you've got some good ones," Robin quipped from behind, then immediately apologizing for coming off 'a little too Wally'.
"I don't mind," she smirked back.
As the fight progressed, Red Volcano used his power to activate the volcano beneath them. Wally used the team's telepathic link to inform them that he was activating a "stage two" eruption. "It gets to stage three, kiss the hemisphere goodbye."
The team attacked from all sides. Zatanna and Wally teamed up, activating an up-scaled version of a spell she admits to using whenever she wants to sneak out of the house: duplicates. Specifically, duplicates of Wally that offered a distraction so that the real Wally could recuse M'gann from Volcano's clutches. But the battle was far from over. If they didn't stop Volcano soon, they wouldn't be able to stop the eruption.
Surprisingly, Red Tornado and his two other siblings: Red Torpedo and Red Inferno, were able to overcome their evil-intended functions and remember the heroes they were within. They came to the young superheroes' aid, using their combined powers to subdue Red Volcano. Torpedo and Inferno held him beneath the magma, where the three of them were disintegrated from the heat. Red Tornado was saved at the last moment by M'gann, suffering only the loss of his legs.
After some scientific leadership by Wally, the team was able to avert a major geological crisis; Red Tornado used his wind control to divert the ash into space, and the Earth was saved from a nuclear winter.
On the return trip back to Mount Justice, Robin asked Zatanna if she'd had a "good kidnapping."
"Actually, yeah." she answered. "Best ever."
"First of many, I hope," he chuckled.
For the first time, Zatanna looked less than confident as she added, "...if my dad doesn't ground me for life."
Meanwhile:
"She's grounded for life!" Zatara could be heard shouting at Black Canary, whom he was furious at for vouching for the other teens. He declared that his daughter would never join the team. Not if he had anything to say about it.
Have you read up on how the game works?:
1st person sample
[The Guide flicks on to see a lightly-tanned teenager with dark hair, blue eyes, and a raised eyebrow. She seems surprised by the sudden activation, and holds it away from her body in surprise.]
Oh, wow. My bad?
[Tilting it one way or the other, she shrugs and decides to take advantage of the situation]
Hey, uh...anybody else from Earth end up here too? Dad? Robin? Anyone? 'cause I'm still not sure what's going on, and some answers would be really great right about now.
[She moves to turn the thing off, and you can hear her muttering under her breath in the process:]
When I said I hoped to get kidnapped again, this is so not what I had in mind.
3rd person sample:
Zatanna sits back in her seat, feet propped up on the desk. Casually sipping from a tall glass of green limeade. She savors the unique flavor of the alien drink for a moment, lightly stirring the ice around to spread the coldness as much as possible.
A series of grunts to her immediate right draws her attention, and she turns to the entranced Vogon bureaucrat with a raised eyebrow.
"What do you mean, what species am I? I already said to put down that I came from Earth."
More grunts.
"Which one?!"
It is at that particular moment a second Vogon appears. His(?) eyes are narrowed, arms crossed, and he sends the young teen a disapproving look. Like a father who had just caught her sneaking out yet again because the duplicate spell she used had worn off too soon. (Not that she...er...knew anything about that completely hypothetical scenario, of course.)
She looks up at him with the most innocent of smiles, politely lowering her feet to the ground. The straw goes back in her mouth as she mumbles:
"Tegrof tahw uoy ees ereh, dna klaw yawa."
The Vogon instantly forgets what he's seeing, turns around, and walks away without question.
Satisfied, Zatanna's feet return to their previously propped position, and she turns back to her current 'assistant' for paperwork duty.
"Like I was saying...I dunno. Make up a number. 16 works for me."
