[She leaned in a but to get a good look at the metal lump. Her eyebrows rose, impressed.]

That used to be silverware? Nice.

Think you can split it up into two even, completely circular flat pendants? Preferably about three centimeters in diameter, but that part's not mandatory. Probably.

[Korra looks back down at the metal again, studying it.]

I should be able to. Hold on.

[She levitates the metal between her palms, beginning to smooth out the odd bumps until it's a ball of metal, then splits it into two even parts. It's a kind of bending that she's still somewhat new to, and requires a different kind of precision than just regular bending. It's probably a good thing she's had a lot of practice shaping things out of metal in Haven so far, or this would take a lot longer.]

[Unsure of exactly how far Korra's abilities extended, Zatanna watched with an unusually patient silence. Admiring the art of a different kind of magic.]

[Korra splits the ball of metal into two now, dropping one onto the bed while she flattens the first one. Once she looks satisfied with the disc she's created, she repeats the process on the other one, remembering to create a loop for the string on both.

She holds the pendants out. They're flat and circular, with some thickness to them for sturdiness.]

[It was everything she could have expected and hoped for. The little pendants were small enough to be worn comfortably around the neck, yet large enough for her to do what she needed to do next.]

Can you pass me the salt?

I'll cleanse them both real quick before I start the magic up.

[Korra wordlessly hands the salt over, settling down to watch Zatanna do her thing. Now it's her turn to be fascinated--not that she isn't always, with Zatanna's magic.]

A physical kind of cleanse or a spiritual kind?

Sort of both, but mainly the latter.

[It took a steady hand to shake the salt out so precisely, forming a circle roughly nine inches in diameter around the two pendants before pouring a small amount into her palm and sprinkling over them directly.]

Salt's a natural absorbent. It collects all the negative energies in the immediate area that might otherwise interfere with the spell.

[Once that was finished, Zatanna then "washed" her own hands with a touch more salt then set the container to one side. She'd tried to use as little as possible, but still as much as was needed. With one finger she reached for the first pen and and began drawing. An invisible symbol at first. But it was something continuous. Something with points. Five of them, engulfed in a circle.]

Ideally, I'd actually draw this on for real...but you know Haven.

[Korra's eyes follows Zatanna's hands as they go through the motions of cleansing the metal.]

So you guys use salt? Tenzin once did a cleansing ceremony in this one meditation area, go get all the bad energies out. He used incense to do it, though.

[Still, it's interesting to know that "cleansing" ceremonies exist for Zatanna and her magic, too. It's another link between them.]

Yeah, the "no writing" rule. Is the spell going to stay on if you don't draw it on for real?

[She continued with the motion, over and over, until faint blue, glowing lines could be seen in her finger's wake. Slowly infusing the pendant with the necessary magic.]

It should.

The metal's more important than the symbol. That's what's going to hold the power to protect us.

[Korra props her chin in her hand as she watches the light show. Now there's something you don't see everyday.]

Good to know. At least that's one thing Haven can't ruin for us. It's just lucky we can work around the no writing rule.

[She finished tracing the symbol repeatedly on one pendant, then switched to the other. The first one continued to glow that faint blue in the shape of a pentagram. Perfectly uniform, despite being finger-drawn. Magic.]

I'm lucky I thought of it. Or else we might've been in slightly more trouble.

They're small enough we should be able to keep them under our shirts without anyone noticing.

Slightly is putting it lightly.

[She doesn't even want to think about all the ways having a kid in Haven could go wrong. Parenting issues aside, of course.

She picks up the finished pendant curiously.]

Is it going to keep glowing like that?

[Just imagine the small heart attack she'd had when Kal first brought it up; yeah, definitely not something she ever wanted to have to deal with.]

No, it'll fade the moment I finish the ritual. That's just a show of the magic being active right now.

The rest of the time, it'll look like a perfectly ordinary, blank pendant.

At least it'll be easier to wear that way.

[She can only imagine how much unwanted attention a glowing, obviously magical pendant would draw to them.

Korra sets the pendant back down and lets Zatanna finish up before interrupting again.]

[It wasn't much longer before the second pendant was finished. Spell officially cast, she tied hers around her neck before using one finger to break the circle of salt. Both pendants immediately faded into normal metal circles.]

For once, subtle is probably the better way to go.

[Korra reaches for the other pendant, letting it rest in her palm as she stares down at it. Then she closes her fingers over it and smiles at Zatanna.]

No kidding. Thanks for doing this.
