[After the main group comes back from exploring the area where the garden had been, Korra makes a few pit stops to share some goods she'd found.]
Hey, I found some fruit while we were down there. Might as well take what we can before the garden's completely gone. [Since the power-suppressant's mostly gone, too.]
Anyway, I left an apple under your pillow. Thought you might like something that's fresh for once.
[There's a bit of initial shuffling on her end, as she struggles to balance the phone and move the aforementioned pillow. The fact that somebody was in her room without her knowing hardly bothered her; she trusted Korra. And it wasn't as if she had anything of value to steal, anyway.]
Hey, Zee, so I know you're busy with important things like, I don't know, surviving — [ her voice lowers. then, conspiratorially. ] — but I could use a little Sabrina for a side project.
[She has absolutely no idea what was going on, but STEPH NEEDED HER]
I'm in.
[Yup, that was it. No questions asked. Hey, it couldn't be any worse than half the things Kon's talked her into. like she didn't enable him right back]
[Conner's bunk. It is where all the cool kids are hanging these days. At least until Conner gets home and kicks them out of it, but that may be part of the fun. Kon is casually sitting across the bunk so he can lean against the wall, playing with Zatanna's hair.]
So, naturally that's when the mean history teacher shows up and is all, if you don't get an A on your next test, I'm calling your parents! Which is the last thing Wendy needs because she and her Mom are already in a tight spot because she's worried about Wendy sneaking out at night to stalk werewolves.
[She loved it when he played with her hair like that.]
[Why else would she seem so content while listening to him ramble on about that crazy show of his (which, admittedly, did sound better than those awful Italian soaps her dad used to watch when he thought no one was looking)? A compromise. One Kon hadn't realized he was making, but one that seemed to appease them both all the same.]
[Everything about the moment felt right. The feeling of his fingers through her hair. Gentle. Almost loving. His voice, smooth and bright and full of such joy. She was only half paying attention, but a few key words did stick out long enough for her to continue feigning interest.]
That sounds like a familiar story.
[How long had she snuck out at night because her father hated the thought of her fighting crime so young?]
[You know what, they all keep doing their particular versions of 'barging into' his room, he might as well return the favor. But he does knock a bit, because...
[Without video, Bayo would inevitably miss the range of emotions washing over her. Guilt. Sadness. Not surprise, though. Not when she thought back to those moments. When he remembered, but she hadn't.]
[A pause. Wonderful way to start a message, Shakespeare. Absolutely stunning.]
I wanted to do this in person, y'know. I mean, I wasn't gonna do the whole Say Anything deal with the boombox or whatever, but... [Another pause. There's the sound of a sigh.]
I just... I don't really know where to start. The last time this happened to someone I... s-someone I was close to, I mean-- I couldn't handle it. Just avoided her like a coward. I don't wanna make the same mistake this time. I know it sounds selfish and, like... probably the creepiest thing in the world right now, seein' as how you don't remember me. But... I miss you, Zee. I miss sharin' witty banter with you and makin' you dinner and how you never ever looked at me like you were judgin' me, even when you saw me at my worst.
...I don't know where I'm going with this. I just wanted to say that I miss you. I miss us bein' friends. That's, uh. That's it, I guess.
[She replayed the message once. Twice. Like she were trying to commit the words to memory rather than simply give them time to process. She knew that things were rough with the temporary amnesia...she could still remember the sound of his voice when he realized... but this?]
[By the time she finished her third listen-through, she was crying. Twin trails of tears streaming down her cheeks. Now that was just unacceptable; hastily, she reached up to wipe at her face, hoping her eyes weren't so red that they would give her away when she went to turn on the setting to a reply:]
[Kal let out a sigh as he closed the door behind him, reaching to rub his forehead he’d forced himself not to freak out too much at seeing Kon- at smelling Kon’s blood. But knowing he’d died so many times was one thing, seeing it with his own eyes was something entirely different.
It wasn’t something he had been ready for. He’d gone through all of those deaths, sometimes alone, because he jumped at the chance to try and help make things better. He was such a brave little soldier. He was his son. And he was going through something possibly worse than death and he felt like running to the nearest toilet and-.]
Oh! [He finally looked up, raising both eyebrows at seeing her.] You’re awake.
["Awake" was a highly relative term. She was conscious, yes, and even mostly awake of her surroundings.]
[But her skin was pale--not deathly so, like Kon kept envisioning, yet still enough to be unhealthy--and there were lines beneath her eyes where the exhaustion had taken it's toll. Her eyes were glassy. She stared at him blankly for a moment, as if trying to remember who he was. Kal would see the moment everything finally registered, because she turned her body fully to face him.]
How is he?
[He would have to forgive her lack of a proper greeting that day. Priorities were clear, on both their parts.]
[It's been a few hours since Zatanna started using her magic to stabilize Kon, and Korra hasn't seen her even take a break. It's a little worrying, though Korra understands. If it had been Conner, she would be doing the exact same.
Korra puts a hand on Zee's shoulder, frowning.]
You should eat something. Using all that magic is making you tired, right?
[It wasn't like she didn't already know everything Korra was saying. Her eyelids were dropping. Her limbs felt like lead. Her stomach ached in its emptiness. Even she couldn't ignore signs like those.]
[To consider a phone call like this unexpected would have seriously underestimated how well she had come to know Kon. All of a day had passed since he had returned from the brink of Death...or, at least, what had appeared to be the brink of death...and even though she still wasn't entirely sure how or why, Zatanna wasn't going to look this gift horse in the mouth.]
[Something told her this particular horse liked to bite.]
We'll see about the holding hands part. I'm not sure I'm ready for that kind of commitment yet.
[Hey Miss Zatara, there's a masked figure sitting on a roof of a building that just so happens to be in your path. Said figure also happened to decide to come in plain view just when you turned the corner. Coincidence?]
[No such thing; not when it came to bats. Or Robins, in this case.]
[There was a fleeting moment when she considered just...walking right on by. Pretending she didn't see him. It would serve the guy right. In the end, however, curiosity got the better of her. He was very blatantly trying to get her attention, and there had to be a reason why.]
[So she waited until she was at the base of said building before slowly levitating herself upward.]
You know, some people use the phone when they want to say 'hi'. You already have my picture and everything.
[To say Zatanna's mind had been a little...preoccupied the last few days would be a gross understatement. So when Robin--and it was only because of the subtle differences in uniform and mask that she was even able to figure out which one--abruptly called her up, it took a moment for her to figure out what he was even talking about.]
[Once the ceiling of the tunnel's been opened up, it becomes clear just what the clean up this time is going to involve--finding some way out of the hole they've been dropped into.
For now, though, Korra's too tired to deal with any sort of planning, and all she'd like to do is curl up with Conner, now that she can again. She finds her way to apartment 6.3, passing by Zee and flopping onto the nearest bed face-first.]
[There were two things to take note of in that moment. The first being the most obvious, Korra's current state, but also the more expected of the two. Given the recent efforts around Haven. But the older girl was still breathing, evident by the verbal greeting, and so Zatanna didn't think too much of it.]
[What she did take note of was the fact that Korra had casually wandered into 6.3 with barely a second thought. Even though, the last Zatanna knew, she and Conner had still been...thinking things through.]
[Now here's a weird sight: Korra peeking into Zatanna's room somewhat suspiciously, without saying a word at first. She scans the beds, apparently checking if anyone else is there before she finally steps inside and closes the door behind her.]
The current group of attackers in Haven West are impersonating the rebels. One of them tried to pass themselves off as Caroline and admitted the truth after I caught them in the lie. Don't trust what they say.
[He still hasn't forgotten your heinous opinions, but he won't hold it against you right now Zee.]
[She had been alone--purposely--at the moment, taking the opportunity away from watching eyes to let the tears flow. Sobbing quietly, when her phone indicated an incoming call. It was audio only, and yet she still instinctively reached up to wipe at her cheeks, hoping her face wasn't too flushed. Not that it made much difference in the end, because of who was calling.]
...you were listening, weren't you?
[Trying--and failing--to laugh it off. Her voice quivered. If he hadn't known before, he would certainly know now.]
